The Dr. Who Sci-Fi Serial & DW Audio Collection: The History

If you live in one of the main English speaking countries it would have been most likely very difficult for you to of not, at least, heard of the Science fiction legend Doctor Who! Thanks to the rebirth of the serial in 2005 following a 15yr pause, Dr. Who is as popular as ever with episodes being broadcasted on the international Science fiction channel and even on US TV channels as well as the BBC’s transmissions.

Thanks to the new serial DW is now officially the longest running Sci-Fi serial ever with the first episode transmitted by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Doctor & his companions journeyed back 100,000 years into Earth’s past to give a hand to some somewhat unintelligent cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire.

During the mid 70s the BBC expanded DW onto the audio median making the 1st Doctor Who Audio. The 1st releases were for the most part soundtracks from the TV shows with linking narration by the Doctors. But due to their popularity soon after stories were produced specifically for Audiobook release solely, often narrated by past Doctors of the TV serial.

To add to this the BBC began producing radio stories, again with past Drs who had played in the serial, these stories were also made accessible in Audiobook format. Another good use the BBC have found for audio with DW is the re-creation of old episodes that had been lost. Currently the BBC’s Dr. Who Audio collection has over fifty titles all available in top notch Digital format at a reduced download price! The collection spans all the way though the first Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. In addition Torchwood Audio & Sarah Jane Audiobooks have also been added recently.

One of the really good things about DW Audio Books is that they provide us the freedom to listen to our favorite episodes anywhere we please with the use of the modern mp3 player. Audiobooks help us to get more out of our increasingly busier days, as we can easily listen to them while doing other things like working out, house work, driving, and and additional chores that allow us to multitask. Another reason why individuals like Doctor Who audio is because in many cases the audio episodes are now read by the actors of the show. Parents also buy them for children entertainment in cars etc.

With the Doctor Who New series going from strength to strength and more and more Audios being created available both from the old and new serial & now from Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like Dr. Who & Dr. Who Audios are here to stay for some time to come!
